What about the most popular English names for baby boys and baby girls?
英国国家统计局每年都会公布去年一年中最受欢迎的十大男性、女性新生儿名字。据最新数据,2017年英国最受欢迎的新生儿名字是这些↓
其中,“Oliver”和“Olivia”热度不减,连续多年称霸最受欢迎的新生男孩及女孩名榜首。
According to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), "Oliver" and "Olivia" remained the most popular names in England and Wales in 2017.
Oliver
音译名:奥利弗
“Oliver”这个男孩英文名来源于古法语教名,最先由诺曼人引入英国,在中世纪的英国是个很常见的英文名。但由于“独裁者”奥利弗·克伦威尔的不受欢迎,使它在很长一段时间内变得极为少见。一直到狄更斯的小说《雾都孤儿》( Oliver Twist )出版,才又开始变得普遍起来。
As a masculine given name of Old French origin, "Oliver" was first introduced to the UK by the Normans and remained a common name in medieval England. It became rare after the Restoration, largely because of the unpopularity of Oliver Cromwell, one of the most controversial figures in British history who is considered as a regicidal dictator by many. However, the name regained its popularity in the 19th century, possibly inspired by the child protagonist of Charles Dicken's novel "Oliver Twist" which was published as a series from 1837-1839.
Olivia
音译名:奥莉维亚
“Olivia”由“olive”(橄榄树)变体而来,象征和平。这个英文名在十三世纪的英国就已出现,但直到莎士比亚的作品《第十二夜》问世,它才慢慢变得流行起来。尤其是到20世纪90年代中期后,它成为英语国家中最受欢迎的女孩名之一。自2014年,它更是连续四年位居英国最受欢迎的女孩名榜首。
李小鹏家乖萌奥莉的英文名就是Olivia↑
Derived from Latin, the feminine given name "Olivia" meaning "olive" occurred in England as early as the 13th century. However, it was not until William Shakespeare used it for a female character in his play "Twelfth Night" that it was first popularized. By the mid-1990s, it has already become one of the most popular given names to baby girls among the English-speaking countries. Since 2014, "Olivia" has been crowned to be the most popular female name in the UK for four consecutive years running.
英国人最偏爱的“Oliver”和“Olivia”在美国人心中同样位居最受欢迎的男女孩名前十位,不过Top 1还是稍微有些出入。
据美国社会保障署2017年数据,美国最受欢迎的新生男女孩名分别为“Liam” 和 “Emma”。“Oliver”和“Olivia”则分别位居第九、第二。
While in America, the most popular given names to baby boys and girls in 2017 were "Liam" and "Emma" respectively, according to data released by the United States Social Security Administration (SSA).
Liam
(Liam Hemsworth)↑
"Liam" is an Irish name that was originated from Old German meaning "helmet of will" or "guardian." It remained hardly known to those who were outside Ireland until the end of 18th century. However, the name started to gain ground in the UK since 1980, and further spread its popularity to the U.S. in the past few years. It became the second most popular given name to baby boys in 2013, and climbed to the top in 2017.
Emma
Unlike its short and cute spelling, "Emma" the feminine given name means "whole or universal." It was originated from Germanic names and is also used as a diminutive of names like "Emmeline" or "Amelia". In 1815, the publication of Jane Austen's novel "Emma" made it a household name in England. However, it was not until the 20th century that the name began to gain its fame in the United States. It skyrocketed to reach the top 100 names for girls in the late 1990s, and continued to become the most popular in 2017.
所以,中文名也好,英文名也罢,
你的名字上榜了吗?
